BACKGROUND: Kakuma Refugee Camp
Kakuma Refugee Camp is located in Turkana County, in northwestern Kenya, near the border with South Sudan. Established in 1992, the camp was originally designed to host refugees fleeing conflict in Sudan. Over the years, it has grown to accommodate refugees and asylum seekers from multiple countries, including South Sudan, Somalia, Ethiopia, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Burundi, Rwanda, Eritrea, and others. As of recent estimates, Kakuma hosts over 200,000 people, making it one of the largest and most diverse refugee camps in Africa.
THE CONTEXT
Kakuma lies in a semi-arid, desert-like environment characterized by:
- High temperatures (often exceeding 40°C),
- Low and erratic rainfall,
- Frequent dust storms,
- Poor soil fertility and sparse vegetation.
These harsh climatic conditions make access to food, water, and energy particularly challenging and contribute to the environmental degradation seen in and around the camp.
CHALLENGES
Refugees in Kakuma face numerous hardships, including:
- Overcrowding and limited housing,
- Water scarcity and sanitation issues,
- Dependence on food aid,
- Limited livelihood opportunities,
- Environmental degradation due to firewood collection and poor waste management.
OPPORTUNITIES FOR DEVELOPMENT
Kakuma also presents unique opportunities for development, especially through:
- Permaculture and sustainable agriculture to address food security,
- Tree planting and environmental restoration to reverse land degradation,
- Youth empowerment and vocational training to build skills and resilience,
- Partnerships with NGOs, UNHCR, and government entities to promote self-reliance.
